Transition from Freelancer to Entrepreneurship

Do you know what the title is for any blogger or journalist who don’t work for a specific outlet? We are called freelance writers.  We are free to write for any company and are paid for it.  This is called a self employed business.  Working as a freelancer is all about marketing and selling yourself.

Freelance writing can be seen as a hobby or a side business.  Not sure what to do? Start out as a hobby, make a success of the hobby and then turn it into a business (become an entrepreneur).  Google has many articles you can read about transitioning into a business.

Entrepreneurship as seen directly and credited to Wikipedia is the creation or extraction of value.  With this definition, entrepreneurship is viewed as change, which may include other values than simply economic ones.

Entrepreneurship is an act of being an entrepreneur, or “the owner or manager of a business enterprise who, by risk and initiative, attempts to make profits”. Entrepreneurs act as managers and oversee the launch and growth of an enterprise. Entrepreneurship is the process by which either an individual or a team identifies a business opportunity and acquires and deploys the necessary resources required for its exploitation.

As you start to progress in your business, you may realise that as a freelancer, you might not have been doing things in the right way. Learning to sell yourself is crucial, but when you are a freelancer, you are one of a crowd. Starting to look like an entrepreneur or the owner of a business means that you will have to fulfil the role of someone who has a lot of responsibility.

Thinking like a business means that you have to stop promoting yourself as an individual. You need crucial selling points for the business for competing with other freelancers and businesses. Setting yourself up as a business, you may not be competing with other businesses in the same way,  you will have other companies that you are fighting with. You may want to hire a brand developer like Angela Wei Milk Studios, they can help loads with this.

The exploitation of entrepreneurial opportunities may include:

Developing a business plan
Hiring a brand developer
Acquiring financial and material resources
Providing leadership
Being responsible for both the ventures success or failure
Risk aversion

The best piece of advice is to know what you are getting into before you get in too deep.  You must have a clear-cut vision of what you want to achieve with your business.  You may have an idea of how to run a business, but you will learn from the mistakes you have made early on. Partly,  with marketing, as well as talent. You will also realise that if you want to move forward,  you will have to change your own attitudes. And you need to remember the importance of transitioning. Ensure that you are building up your brand, as well as learning those important networking skills so you are are able to transition gently.
