K-Beauty: What’s Unique About It?

The Korean Wave or Hallyu Wave has been on the rise for a couple of years now, and it’s no longer limited to music, TV shows, and food. In fact, it has extended to cosmetics as well. More K-beauty brands are entering the international market, and many people swear by their products. In fact, the Korean beauty market is within the top 10 around the world.

From makeup to all forms of skin care products, Korean cosmetics have them all. Popular K-beauty brands continue to dominate the beauty industry in many countries, and in the Philippines, where a lot of Korean beauty brands are available, the well-known Dear Klairs brand launched just this year.

If you haven’t tried any Korean cosmetic products at all, maybe you’ve wondered what makes them so popular and well-loved. Here’s what the industry experts say:

The Spread of the Korean Wave Culture

Christine Chang, co-creator of Glow Recipe, says that Korea has caught up quickly to Japan’s and France’s standing in the beauty industry because of the technological advancements and the Korean Wave culture. K-pop artists have become influential figures to audiences worldwide, from music to fashion to skin care, and they’re supposedly using K-beauty brands, too.

Upon entering a Korean cosmetics store, you’ve probably noticed how there is a designated product for almost all kinds of skin condition. South Korea has products labeled as “functional cosmetics”. This is because Korean consumers are very up-to-date when it comes to the trends in beauty, so Korean cosmetic companies are always coming up with new products that fit whatever the current trend is.

Healthier Ingredients

Korean cosmetics are known to contain natural ingredients like aloe vera, birch sap, and black sugar, to name a few. According to Dr. Cho, botanical ingredients are antioxidants with anti-inflammatory and anti-aging functions. Moreover, Korean beauty products are also big on SPF, which protects the sun from harmful UV rays.

Other than its natural ingredients, K-beauty also promotes eco-consciousness. Some brands use recyclable packaging and eco-friendly ingredients like organic green tea and camellia flower petals.

Korean 10-Step Skin Care Routine

The Korean 10-step skin care routine made rounds on social media in recent years. This routine focuses on clarifying, toning, and hydrating, all things needed to have a glowing and luminous skin, which is favored by many Korean women.
For every step in this routine, you’d a find a suitable Korean product. Here is the 10-step routine:

  1. Remove Eye Makeup

The skin around the eyes is delicate, so an ordinary facial cleanser may irritate it. That said, an eye makeup remover is necessary.

2. Double cleanse

Two types of cleansers are involved in this step: oil and foam. The oil cleanser is for removing the rest of your makeup and grime, and the foam (or stick) cleanser is for removing impurities.

3. Exfoliate

Exfoliants remove dead skins, and some industry experts actually recommend exfoliating every other day, while others advise doing it only once a month. For most, however, exfoliating twice a week with a gentle product works best.

4. Tone

This is to remove any cleaning residue and prep your skin for the next steps.

5. Essence

Like a toner, an essence also gets your skin ready for the succeeding steps.

6. Treat

This would be the time to tackle your skin issues with boosters, serums, ampoules, and other clarifying, brightening, and hydrating products.

7. Sheet face mask

You can do this weekly to add more moisture to your skin.

8. Eye Cream

As stated, the skin around the eyes is delicate, so it needs special care.

9. Sleep Pack or Moisturizer

For more intense hydration and to detox the skin as you sleep.

10. Sunscreen

The final step is applying sunscreen to protect the skin from sun damage.

With all of those being said, you may have just gotten yourself more intrigued and captivated by the K-beauty craze. If you love taking care of your skin, it’s certainly worth giving a try.
